The local community saw an urgent need for a banking service in Strathmore. A dedicated group of business men and women set about raising $490,010 from almost 300 shareholders. This amount allowed them to purchase a community banking franchise from the Bendigo Bank. In 2001 Strathmore Community Services Ltd was incorporated for the single purpose of purchasing the franchise for the Strathmore Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank. The profits are shared equally between the Bendigo Bank and Strathmore Community Services Ltd. Bendigo Bank Ltd made this franchise available on condition that the non Bendigo Bank portion of the profits went back to the local community by way of sponsorships, grants and donations. There are six directors of Strathmore Community Services Ltd. They are all volunteers and represent the mostly local shareholders. Strathmore Community Services Ltd employs the bank staff, pays the building costs and is responsible for distribution of funds for local community projects. Strathmore Community Services Ltd has given over $1m back to the local community since incorporation.
