Things to See and Do in and around Strathmore
The Maribyrnong River has once again become a vital part of Melbourne, with restaurants, boats, walking, and bike trails bringing people back to the River and its many beautiful parks and gardens.
Many fine old homes and mansions, shops, and civic buildings have been restored to their original beauty, and today many reminders of Moonee Valley’s rich history still remain:
- The Incinerator - The Incinerator Arts Complex is a dynamic and innovative multi-art venue located at 180 Holmes Road, Moonee Ponds. The magnificent Essendon Incinerator was designed as a waste destructor by world renowned architect Walter Burley Griffin. Built in 1929, it was considered a world leader in air purity and economy of operation. The Incinerator operated from 1930 until 1942 and is now the only one still remaining in Victoria. After substantial restoration and renovation, it reopened in 2004 as the Incinerator Arts Complex. Significant as a unique and innovative building, the Incinerator is registered with the National Trust, the Australian Heritage Commission, and Heritage Victoria.

- The Clocktower is a major refurbishment of the building once known as the Essendon Town Hall. Opened in 2000, the Clocktower Centre is the cornerstone of the City of Moonee Valley's cultural life, presenting a vibrant and exciting program of theatre and performing arts. The Clocktower Centre is on the corner of Pascoe Vale and Mount Alexander Roads.
- Newmarket Stockyards - The cattle sale-yards opened in 1859, a year before the railway line from North Melbourne to Essendon began operating with stations at Kensington and Newmarket. Sheep and cattle were driven to the stockyard on hoof – using residential streets as stock routes up until the 1950s – and the Newmarket railway siding was also used to hold and deliver stock through the night.
- Kensington Town Hall - this classical style building in Belair Street, Kensington, was built in 1901. It is heritage listed and currently operates as a community centre and a dance and ballet school. The building is being restored to preserve its facade and foundations.
Strathmore’s wide boulevards, tree-lined streets, and fine mansions are also reminders of our rich history:
- “Rosebank” - this mansion was built in 1845 by wealthy businessman, Thomas Napier, on a hilltop in Woodlands Street, Strathmore
- Napier Park - this large parcel of land was a gift from Napier’s son, Theodore, to the local Council - on the condition that it be retained in its original state. Theodore built a house on Carnarvon Road, Strathmor
- “North Park Mansion” - built in1889 for Alexander McCracken, founding Secretary of the Essendon Football Club. An imposing 42-room mansion, it still stands today.
